I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Stephanie Rife from Dreaming inspirations and am very excited to share with you her lovely work. You can view more of her designs at www.dreaminginspirations.com Enjoy!
This may sound weird but I thought about it for a long time and then one night in a dream I had a full-blown business and the name was Dreaming Inspirations so I thought it was meant to be.
How did you get it started?
I got started when my cousin was getting married and she was on a very small budget and asked me to design her invitations and accessories for her wedding. After that I started designing for friends and family and love every minute of it!!
What is your favorite design for sale right now?
“Sledding Snowman” is my favorite design right now because I love snowmen and I can’t wait to get out in the snow and build one!!
How would you describe your style?
My style.. hmmm.. I would say fun and colorful with a lot of illustrations and somewhat homey. Does that make sense.. lol
What is your normal workflow or process like?
I like to sketch a bit first. Then scan my image and open it in illustrator work on making my illustrations from the scan. Sometimes I just start in illustrator and create my illustrations. Once I’m done with the illustrating I then begin to do the layout and add type.
How many iterations does it take for a design to become final?
Some designs can take me days with 30 or more iterations and some can take me a couple hours with 5 iterations its always different.
What tools, techniques, and mindsets do you find absolutely essential?
I can not live without my computer, sketchpad, and Illustrator.. as for techniques the most important and still a learning process is Typography. For me typography is a lengthy but extremely important step if its missed your work can look cheesy and unprofessional. Mindset.. I have to be alone and have music on when I’m designing or I can’t get into anything I have to be able to concentrate and having people around does not help me concentrate.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a designer?
I have always been creative and crafty. In high school I was in art for several hours a day and did hand drawn illustrations, graphic design and painting. But I did not get into designing stationary until a couple years ago with the onset of my cousin’s wedding.
Do you have any formal design training?
I took a graphic design class in college but that was some time ago and everything I am learning now is self taught and a lot of research online
Do you have a favorite font?
My favorite font right now would be Bombshell Pro. I love how it looks like it is calligraphy with the thick and thin strokes yet modern and delicate
Where do you go for design inspiration?
Love to browse pinterest, blogs, and wedding magazines
What designers do you really admire?
Genevieve Santos (le petit elefant) I love all of her work and hope to plaster my walls with all her work very soon!! Jennifer Wick (J. Wick Design) one of my fellow Minted designers she has stunningly simple illustrations with beautiful typography. Rachel Alethea (Alethea and Ruth) Her florals are stunning and awe inspiring I strive to have beautiful floral like hers. And last but not least Eric Beckett (GeekInk) his typography and hand lettering is my favorite he has a very vintage classic style that stands out and can not go unnoticed.
